DJ, promoter and record label boss Neil Schuyleman aka Kymatik unexpectedly and suddenly passed away on 9th April 2009 at the tragically young age of 34. A hugely familiar face on the local club scene, Neil was known for his unfailing positivity, enthusiasm and cheerful demeanour as much as for his love of music.

After establishing the long-running drum and bass night Trisect while living in Leicester, Neil moved to Bristol and soon fell in love with the emerging sound of dubstep. His DJ sets and prolific production of mixes (most notably the widely distributed ‘Dub I Up Landlord’ series) introduced huge numbers of people to the new genre, and its huge popularity today is a fitting testament to his passion for it.

As a resident for Byte he could often be found behind the decks at Native, delivering a stream of headliner-overshadowing sets, but he would take any opportunity to play records of all manner of styles in any pub, club, party or bedroom – or just sit up to the small hours talking music with anyone who would listen.

Last year he and some friends established Soul Motive Records, and after just a handful of releases it has come to be regarded as one of the most exciting new labels around.

A post about the news on Bristol music forum Hijack, where Neil was a regular contributor, quickly grew into a touching testimonial to a man who will be sadly missed by a great many people.
